USl Welcome to our About us page! We are currently Students at Dartmouth Middle School in San Jose, California. For Language arts, we were asked to create an innovation that will benefit the Dartmouth Community. So our group, Brandon Mayakawa, Eilon Pressman, James Lewandowski, Madi Leong, Maddy Marquez, Rachel McCarroll, and Sharon Iype, came up with this idea for our innovation. We all noticed how excluded DHOH kids at Dartmouth were. We wanted to make a change to that so we thought making a way hearing students could learn sign language would bridge the communication gap between hearing and hard of hearing students. Eventually, we sent out a survey to students and teachers. Once we got all of information we found the school would enjoy a way to learn sign language and more that half the respondents believed DHOH kids in our community were neglected as well. Our first ideas were to create and exploratory class, or do a fifteen minute session, a club. Then we came up with this idea where this website would be presented in our schools daily announcements and every week teachers would present a phrase for 10-15 minutes during a class period so kids could learn the phrase by the end of the week. At the end of the year, the would be a school wide quiet day, meaning students would only communicate with basic sign language they learned in the past year. We really hope this project exceeds to the point where it actually becomes part of the Dartmouth Society.
